The Power of Literacy – Learning Changes Lives

Richard Nahi - Gangster Turned Pastor

Bayley Moor/Fairfax Media

For the last two months the Adult Literacy Rural Trust has been supporting Richard Nahi on his journey to learn to read. A former gang member (now a pastor), Nahi did not come from a supportive family environment who encouraged him to learn. As a result, he unfortunately missed out on this important skill.

But he has taken his education into his own hands:

I am encouraging others [to learn]. You only get one chance on this earth, anyone can do it, it’s just how much you want to do it.

We are very proud of Nahi, his attitude is incredibly inspiring to others who are also struggling with literacy. He is a fantastic example that you can learn no matter what stage of life you are in or your previous circumstances. When you commit to your own learning, it is possible to achieve great things.

The Literacy Trust is always here to help, if you or someone you know is struggling please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
